Intensity and phase noise in microcavity surface-emitting semiconductor lasers
The noise characteristics of vertical-cavity surface-emitting (VCSE) lasers are studied by using the Langevin rate equations modified suitably to include the enhanced spontaneous emission occurring in such microcavity lasers. The intensity and frequency noise spectra show the effects induced by suppression of relaxation oscillations. However, such a suppression depends on the output power as we...
متن کاملPhase-locked arrays of surface-emitting graded-photonic-heterostructure terahertz semiconductor lasers.
We have demonstrated that a hybrid laser array, combining graded-photonic-heterostructure terahertz semiconductor lasers with a ring resonator, allows the relative phase (either symmetric or anti-symmetric) between the sources to be fixed by design. We have successfully phase-locked up to five separate lasers. Compared with a single device, we achieved a clear narrowing of the output beam profile.
متن کاملMid-Infrared Surface-Emitting Two Dimensional Photonic Crystal Semiconductor Lasers
The mid-infrared (mid-IR) region, covering the electromagnetic spectrum from about 2.5 to 25 ┤m wavelength, is of unique interest for many applications, especially for molecular spectroscopy, because the vibrational frequencies of almost all target molecules and hydrocarbons are in this spectral region, such as NO, NO2, CO, CO2, HF, and CH4. The specific application areas for molecular spectros...
متن کاملSurface-emitting fiber lasers.
All fiber lasers to date emit radiation only along the fiber axis. Here a fiber that exhibits laser emission that is radially directed from its circumferential surface is demonstrated. A unique and controlled azimuthally anisotropic optical wave front results from the interplay between a cylindrical photonic bandgap fiber resonator, anisotropic organic dye gain, and a linearly polarized axial p...
متن کاملVertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers
The goal of this project was to increase the power of vertical cavity surface emitting lasers and to convert their wavelength into the blue/ultraviolet and the infrared for sensing applications. We have increased the power to the multi-watt level and have generated several milliwatts of blue light using optical pumping. Electrical pump has been less successful, but we have identified the proble...
